U2U ~ About You and for You
During school term time we can provide alternative
education programmes for 13 to 16 year old students for up to 4 days per
week at our training centre in Beeston and 2 days per week at our
training centre in Worksop
The
U2U Alternative School provides a distinctive and specialised curriculum
covering personal development, life skills and citizenship, using a
teaching methodology that is designed for students in years 9, 10 and 11
who are unable to engage with mainstream school provision.
Our
curriculum is based on a philosophy that places the emphasis on the
whole development of the young person, including emotional, physical and
moral well-being as well as academic progress. We place a strong
emphasis on pro-social modeling and developing emotional resilience and
self awareness.
Formal learning is just as important, and is done in creative and
artistic environments. Students have individual learning plans and the
opportunity to study according to their interests and abilities, a
typical class will include a range of learning methods and achievement
recording techniques.
Our
class sizes are deliberately small, typically 10 students, and our staff
support ratio is high. This intensive support and coaching can have a
dramatic effect on the ability of young people to gain the confidence
and academic momentum to be able to successfully re-engage with learning
in a more formal environment.
Programme content:
Starting in September 2008, our programme will be delivered in line with
the Foundation Learning Tier Diplomas that are being piloted nationally
following a Creative Arts and Media or a Health & Social Care route. The
U2U core curriculum focuses on key & basic skills and, personal & social
development. Functional skills are integrated into the curriculum.
Learners will be taught by a mixture of directed learning & one-to-one
tutorials.
Curriculum:
The core curriculum focuses on the learner’s
personal, emotional and social development through a variety of learning
based activities that challenge the student to explore their attitudes,
perceptions and personal values and question other people’s views and
ideas. We use a variety of teaching methods and recording techniques
including written, artistic, photography, video and voice recording etc.
Literacy Skills are integrated through all of the activities although
they are tested and recorded separately.
The
curriculum is designed to work through National Open College Network
units that are being developed to build towards a full Foundation
Learning Tier Diploma. Students will work at a Level 1. The units can be
collected to either gain an Award (6 units), a Certificate (21 units) or
a Diploma (42 units).
Personal Project:
The students undertake a personal project that is
unique to the individual learner. For this they have 1 hour of direct
learning followed by a one-to-one tutorial. Learners will choose the
topic and manage their own project. The aim of the personal project is
for the learner to use the skills they have learnt throughout the whole
course or other provision that they attend, to demonstrate and develop
these transferable skills in a practical and relevant piece of work.
Cost:
The cost for a place on this course is £6.50 per
learner per hour. Sessions must be reserved and paid for in advance
either annually or on a term by term basis. This cost includes all
course materials, accreditation costs, support costs and basic
refreshments such as fruit snacks and cold drinks during sessions.
Lunches and exam or test feeds are not included.
